You bring a unique skill set to the Food Safety Strategy team - how will this benefit our clients and complement the team dynamic?

As the (proudly!) lone non-subject matter expert on the team, I see my role as creating space for the experts to shine. While I may not be the one diving deep into the technical side of food safety regulations, I bring accessibility, support, and focus on the operational and customer-facing side of Food Safety Strategy.

I serve as a bridge between the technical work and our clients. Ensuring they feel supported, and keeping systems running smoothly. By focusing on backend operations, coordination, and direct client support, I help create structure and efficiency that allows the subject matter experts to concentrate on the science, strategy, regulatory side, and high-level problem solving that keeps organizations compliant and ultimately keeps consumers safe.

What’s a memorable moment from your career so far that shaped how you approach problem‑solving or teamwork?

I tend to be a big over-thinker, which can definitely be a flaw at times. I spend extra time replaying scenarios in my head, weighing the outcome, or trying to anticipate how something will be received. This may take longer than necessary to act or respond, especially in situations that require quick input or decision-making.

There have been several times in collaborative settings where I’ve had an idea but chose not to speak up because I was second-guessing myself or assuming someone else’s idea might be better. Oftentimes, a team member later suggested the exact idea I had been considering. Those times have helped me recognize that holding back doesn’t serve the team or my own growth.

I’ve been more intentional about working on my self-doubt and trusting my instinct. I challenge myself to contribute earlier and take action with confidence. Over time, I’ve seen improvement in my decisiveness and willingness to speak up, and I continue to treat this as an area of growth.

What excites you or makes you nervous about working with Food Safety Strategy?

Oh goodness — what a fun question! Honestly, how could someone not be excited about working with Jen? Having been her colleague in the association world, I always noticed how often people sought out her expertise. She was one of the people everyone wanted in the room when things got serious. Later, when I had the chance to officially join the food safety team and work with her directly, I quickly understood why. Her passion, depth of knowledge, and genuine character are impressive and energizing.

I’ve learned that Gretchen has a similar passion and is making her mark in the food safety industry. Having worked with her before, I knew the level of dedication and thoughtfulness she brings to the table. Having those previous experiences, made this an easy decision that I am truly excited about.

When you're not thinking about food safety, what hobby or activity brings you the most joy or energy?

When I’m not thinking about food safety, I’ve learned I’m curious about people. Why we make the decisions we make, what drives us, what shaped our perspectives, and how their journey has led them to where they are today. In many ways, I use travel as my “excuse” to lean into that curiosity. Visiting new places isn’t just about sightseeing for me — it’s about connection. I’m drawn to learning the culture, hearing local perspectives. Whether it’s a quick chat with someone in a coffee shop, a guided tour led by someone who loves their city, or a long dinner conversation with new friends, those human interactions bring me joy.
